ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JANUARY 13th 2010: Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas has expressed sympathy and concern over the situation in Haiti, following the 7.0 Earth Quake that shook that country’s capital on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said Grenada is putting together all available resources, human and material, to assist our sister CARICOM nation at the earliest possible time. The Ministry of National Security and National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) will coordinate the assistance.

The following is the full text of the Prime Minister’s message:

“I deeply sympathize with the people of Haiti, especially those who lost loved ones, in this natural disaster. I hope the recovery efforts will be swift and that those who are still alive and reportedly trapped will be quickly rescued to reduce the loss of additional lives.

I am particularly concerned about the collapsed of a hospital in Port-au-Prince; because it does not help that those who should be in a position to help the injured, are themselves seeking help.

I hope the assistance of the International community would be forth coming in a timely manner. We will continue to monitor the situation and will respond to any request for assistance that we can provide. Our prayers are with the people of this sister CARICOM State at this time of difficulty.”
Prime Minister Thomas will chair a meeting of the National Emergency Advisory Committee (NEAC) at 3.00pm today. The Prime Minister is in contact with the Chairman of the Regional Security System (RSS) to formulate a coordinated regional response to the crisis in Haiti.

Prime Minister Thomas has also confirmed that the lone Grenadian Police Officer serving in Haiti, ASP Cosmos Douglas, who serves with the Borders Section of the UN Logistics Base, is alive and well.
